History of the 500 Lire 1989 Campanella — Commemorativa
Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639) was an Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, and poet, best known for his utopian work "La Citta' del Sole" (The City of the Sun), written during his long imprisonment. Born in Stilo, Calabria, he spent 27 years in Spanish jails after being accused of heresy and conspiracy. The 1989 commemorative 500 Lire was issued to mark the 350th anniversary of his death. It belongs to the Italian Republic's series of silver commemoratives honouring major figures of Italian culture and history, struck at the Rome Mint in the same silver alloy as the standard Caravelle 500 Lire but with a design dedicated to the philosopher's portrait and symbolic imagery.
