History of the 100 Lire Minerva — Serie 1955-2001

The 100 Lire Minerva is one of the most enduring coins of the Italian Republic, issued without interruption from 1955 to 2001. The obverse features an allegorical portrait of Italia, while the reverse depicts Minerva — goddess of wisdom, craft and warfare — standing with her owl and an olive branch, evoking Italy's cultural and intellectual heritage. Struck in Acmonital, a non-magnetic stainless steel alloy developed in Italy, the coin was designed by Eugenio Driutti and was a fixture of everyday life for nearly five decades. Among the most sought-after dates are the early issues from 1955 and 1956, which had lower mintages and are scarce in FDC. The denomination was demonetised on 28 February 2002 with the introduction of the euro.
